A Story of Resilience, Fortitude, and Family

PWC 115 Years

In a bustling city known for its steel industry, sports teams, and famous sandwiches, there is a four-generation design-build and integrated services company that has been catering to the financial industry for an impressive 115 years. A company dedicated to enhancing the growth and strategic direction of banks and credit unions by optimizing retail branch networks and operational space through new construction or thoughtful renovations and refreshes, as well as offering branded environments, technology solutions, and strategic consulting services. Established by an innovative entrepreneur in the early 20th century, the company successfully navigated numerous industry trends and transformations over the years, adapting its services to offer effective solutions amidst these shifts.

In its formative years, the company initially established itself as a general contractor with a focus on residential housing projects, showcasing expertise in crafting intricate wrap-around porches. The company evolved and adapted, transitioning into the commercial sector and carving out a niche within the booming financial industry. Embracing modernist principles and incorporating innovative designs and technologies, PWCampbell positioned itself as a leader in the field, emerging as a trusted provider and recognized authority within the financial sector.

Throughout its long history, the company witnessed the rise and fall of economic booms and busts, the advent of online and mobile banking, and the increased use of in-branch technology. Each new trend and change presented both challenges and opportunities for the company, pushing them to constantly innovate and reinvent themselves to meet the evolving needs of their clients.

In 2019, a significant milestone was reached when the fourth generation of family members, marking the first time women were included, officially joined the third generation in shared ownership. This moment represented a pivotal transition in leadership, symbolizing the continuity and evolution of the family’s legacy within the company. The convergence of multiple generations at the board table signifies a commitment to preserving tradition while embracing innovation and ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the business.

As the company celebrates its 115th anniversary, they look back with pride at all they have accomplished and all the changes they have witnessed. From the days of drafting boards and blueprints to the era of 3D modeling and sustainable design, the company has remained at the forefront of the industry, earning a reputation for excellence, integrity, and reliability.

Looking to the future, the company knows that even more changes and trends await them. But with their rich history, deep expertise, and unwavering commitment to quality, they are confident that they can thrive for generations to come, while continuing to serve the financial industry with dedication and innovation.

Hear from the third-generation mentors and the fourth-generation go-getters:

JIM CAMPBELL

3RD GENERATION

What was the most valuable lesson you learned from previous generations about running a successful business?

One of the most valuable lessons I learned from previous generations—especially from our Dad— was the importance of protecting your reputation above all else in business. He always said, “You can’t make enough money on any job to risk your reputation.” That message stuck with me. His example taught me never to let greed overshadow integrity. Success, he believed, comes from consistently delivering high-quality work at a fair price while staying honest and loyal to your clients. That principle has been a guiding force in everything I do.

JOHN CAMPBELL

3RD GENERATION

What is one piece of advice you would like to give to the next generation challenged with continuing the legacy of PWCampbell?

My advice to the next generation is simple: think long-term. There are no shortcuts or quick wins in this industry. Building lasting success takes patience, commitment, and a relentless focus on delivering value. Keep evolving with the times, anticipate client needs, and stay ahead of the curve. Most importantly, continue to offer the comprehensive, high-quality solutions that clients have come to expect—solutions they can only find under one roof at PWCampbell. That’s how you carry the legacy forward.

CARLIN CAMPBELL

4TH GENERATION

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing PWCampbell and the design-build and integrated services industry in the coming years?

One of the biggest challenges I see for PWCampbell—and the design-build and integrated services industry as a whole—is the ongoing shortage of qualified tradespeople. It’s something we’re already navigating, and I anticipate it becoming even more difficult in the years ahead. While we’re fortunate to have a strong and reliable network of subcontractors, the reality is that as experienced tradesmen retire, there’s a noticeable gap in younger talent stepping in to take their place.

In addition to workforce concerns, keeping pace with rapidly evolving technology will remain a critical priority—not just for our clients in the banking industry, but internally as well. Staying ahead of these changes will be essential to maintaining our competitive edge and continuing to deliver the high-quality, integrated solutions PWCampbell is known for.

4TH GENERATION

What are the three most important characteristics that make for successful client relationships?

1.Always Do What’s Right – It may sound simple, but consistently doing the right thing—especially when it’s not the easiest path—is what builds trust and long-term respect.

2.Listen First, Then Communicate – With such a wide range of services to offer, it’s essential that we fully understand our clients’ needs before proposing solutions. True listening, followed by clear and thoughtful communication, ensures we’re solving the right problems in the right way.

3.Continuously Earn Their Confidence – Being chosen as a partner is just the beginning. We must continually prove our value—during the project, after completion, and before the next opportunity arises.
