Greylock FCU – Regional Headquarters Designed for Impact
Background
Greylock Federal Credit Union was founded in 1935 by seventeen General Electric employees as the Pittsfield G.E. Employees Credit Union, with a mission to help members save and access affordable loans. In 2022, Greylock expanded its field of membership from geographic boundaries to a community-based model, creating new opportunities to partner with local businesses and organizations. This evolution supports a broader membership base while reinforcing the credit union’s commitment to community impact. In 2023, Greylock surpassed the milestone of 100,000 members.
The Problem
As Greylock Federal Credit Union looked to expand into a new market, the Credit Union identified Hudson, NY as the ideal location for a new main office and retail branch. The project represented more than a typical branch expansion as Greylock needed a secondary headquarters that could support long-term growth throughout the New York region while remaining connected to the organization’s established New England roots.
The challenge was twofold:
- Create a highly visible, community-focused financial destination in a new market
- Develop a facility that reflected Greylock’s established brand identity while feeling authentic to the local Hudson community
Greylock also needed a partner capable of delivering a ground-up design-build project efficiently while balancing architecture, branding, operational functionality, and future scalability.
Project Scope/Solution
The project included the design and construction of a new secondary headquarters and retail branch that blended Greylock’s New England-inspired brand with Hudson’s local architectural character. Inspired by the area’s agricultural heritage, the barn-style design and cedar shingle-clad lighthouse entry created a distinctive, community-inspired presence.
PWCampbell also implemented a non-traditional framing approach using post-and-beam construction combined with structural insulated panels (SIPs). This method accelerated the weatherproofing process, allowing interior construction to begin sooner and helping streamline the overall project schedule.
Inside, an open branch concept with exposed architectural framing, along with carefully selected materials and finishes, reinforced Greylock’s timeless New England aesthetic and created a warm, welcoming member experience.
The Results
Since opening, the Hudson location has become a recognizable centerpiece for banking within the local community and an important step in Greylock’s regional expansion strategy.
The project successfully:
- Established Greylock’s presence in a new market
- Created a secondary headquarters positioned for future growth
- Strengthened brand recognition while honoring local architectural context
- Delivered an efficient, high-quality construction solution
- Enhanced the member experience through an open, community-oriented environment
