Modernizing a Community Landmark
Background
Founded in 1964, Legacy Bank has spent decades serving its community while building a strong and sustainable business. With a solid capital base and consistent earnings, the bank has continually invested in technology and services to keep pace with a changing industry. Today, Legacy Bank blends financial stability, modern banking capabilities, and the enduring character of Southwest Virginia to serve its customers now and into the future.
The Problem
After more than 15 years in Abingdon, the branch no longer met the needs of its customers or staff. While the building had solid structural “bones,” it was outdated, cramped, and poorly aligned with the bank’s brand. A large lobby left little room for offices, limiting staff growth, and the building’s location slightly below the road made it less visible to the public. Legacy Bank wanted a solution that would modernize the space, improve functionality, and create a welcoming environment, all without losing its connection to the community.
Project Scope/Solution
Legacy Bank partnered with PWCampbell to renovate and revitalize the branch to better support growth and enhance the overall experience for both staff and customers.
The project included:
- Architectural design concepts and multiple renderings for board review
- Renovation of the existing structure to improve space utilization
- Reconfiguration of the interior to add needed office space
- Updated branding, finishes, and technology throughout the branch
- A phased construction approach that allowed the branch to remain operational, utilizing the drive-through while the lobby was temporarily closed
- Collaboration with furniture, marketing, and merchandising specialists
- On-site project management to oversee schedule, coordination, and communication
The design team also introduced creative architectural solutions to improve the building’s presence—making the branch appear larger, brighter, and more prominent from the road without the cost of constructing a second floor.
The Results
The Abingdon branch now reflects Legacy Bank’s commitment to service while providing a functional, modern space for employees and customers.
Key benefits include:
- Modernized branch environment that reflects the bank’s brand and commitment to service
- Improved space utilization with new offices and work areas to support staff growth
- Enhanced curb appeal and visibility from the roadway
- Strong community response with positive feedback from customers and stakeholders
